What is XGS-PON?

XGS-PON stands for 10-Gigabit-capable Symmetric Passive Optical Network.

In simpler terms:

  • X refers to 10Gbps speeds.
  • G stands for Gigabit.
  • S means symmetrical, so the technology supports the same maximum speed upstream and downstream.
  • PON stands for Passive Optical Network.

For broadband users, this means a fibre technology capable of supporting much faster uploads and downloads.

XGS-PON can support speeds of up to 10Gbps downstream and 10Gbps upstream.

That doesn’t mean every XGS-PON broadband package gives you a 10Gbps connection. The speeds available to you depend on things like your broadband provider, package, network setup and equipment being used.

What XGS-PON provides is plenty of capacity to support faster broadband services.

How Does XGS-PON Work?

XGS-PON is used as part of a full-fibre, or FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), network.

Rather than relying on copper telephone cables for the final stretch into your home, FTTP uses fibre-optic cable all the way to the property.

Data travels through that fibre using pulses of light.

A PON network can distribute a fibre connection between multiple premises using passive optical splitters. They're called passive because the splitting equipment doesn't need electrical power to do its job.

At the provider end is an Optical Line Terminal (OLT).

At your home, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) converts the optical signal into a connection your router and devices can use.

All in all, XGS-PON gives a full-fibre network considerably more capacity.

XGS-PON vs GPON: What's the Difference?

You may have also seen the term GPON when looking at full-fibre broadband.

GPON is an earlier generation of Passive Optical Network technology. It has been widely used for FTTP networks and remains perfectly capable of providing fast broadband.

The big difference is capacity.

GPON supports around 2.5Gbps downstream and 1.25Gbps upstream across a PON.

XGS-PON increases that to 10Gbps downstream and 10Gbps upstream.

The symmetrical part is especially important. Upload capacity matters increasingly as households use cloud storage, video calls, livestreaming, online gaming and other services that regularly send data as well as receive it.

Does XGS-PON Mean 10Gbps Broadband at Home?

Not necessarily.

10Gbps is the capability of the underlying technology rather than a promise that every connected home receives a dedicated 10Gbps internet connection.

Your broadband speed can still depend on things such as:

  • The package you've chosen
  • How the broadband network is configured
  • Your router and home network
  • Whether you're connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  • The capabilities of your phone, laptop, TV or other device
  • The online service you're connecting to

There's little benefit in having a multi-gigabit broadband package if the equipment inside your home can't keep up with it.

Most households don't need a 10Gbps internet connection today. XGS-PON is interesting because it gives fibre networks room to grow.

Households are connecting more devices. Files are getting larger. Streaming quality continues to increase. Cloud services are commonplace, and working from home has made reliable upload performance far more important.

It can also make multi-gigabit packages possible without requiring an entirely new fibre network to reach each property.
