9 Tips to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network | Fusion Fibre Group

Reading time: 6–7 minutes

Your Wi-Fi network is the gateway to your home, and just like you wouldn’t leave your front door unlocked, you shouldn’t leave your router vulnerable. From online banking to smart speakers, everything relies on an internet connection, and that’s why securing your Wi-Fi network is critical for both privacy and home network protection.

At Fusion Fibre Group, we don’t just offer lightning-fast full fibre broadband, we help you stay safe while using it. Read on to see our top tips on how to secure your home Wi-Fi network.

9 Tips on Securing Your Wi-Fi

1. Regularly Update Your Router’s Firmware

Firmware updates fix security bugs and patch vulnerabilities that hackers often exploit. If your router offers auto-updates, turn that on. Otherwise, check your router manufacturer’s website every few months to ensure you stay up-to-date.

2. Use Strong Wi-Fi Encryption (WPA2 and WPA3)

Your Wi-Fi encryption is your first line of defence. ThinkBroadband advises against using WEP encryption, as it is outdated and insecure. Use WPA3, the latest and most secure standard, or at least WPA2. Not sure how encryption works? Read our explainer: What is Full Fibre Broadband and Why is Everyone Switching?

3. Change the Default Router Login

Most routers come with generic usernames and passwords like “admin.” Change both the admin username and password immediately after setup.

4. Disable WPS and Remote Management

Features like WPS and remote management can be common entry points for attackers. Disable them unless absolutely necessary.

5. Rename Your Network (SSID)

Default network names can reveal your ISP or router model. Choose a unique name without personal details.

6. Set Up a Guest Network

Keep visitors and IoT devices separate from your main network with a guest Wi-Fi setup. For a stronger signal, check our guide: What is Blocking Your Wi-Fi Signal?

7. Monitor Who’s Connected

Regularly check your router’s device list or use apps like Fing to detect unknown devices.

8. Optimise Router Placement and Range

Place your router centrally to ensure even coverage and limit signal leakage outside your home. For best placement, check our blog: Where Should You Place Your Wi-Fi Router for the Best Signal?

9. Upgrade Your Router for Better Security

If your router is more than 4–5 years old, consider upgrading to one with WPA3, automatic updates, and built-in firewall and VPN features. Unsure which upgrade path is right? Read our guide: Top 10 Tips on How to Boost Your Broadband Speed at Home

Stay Connected, Stay Safe

Your Wi-Fi network is the foundation of your digital life, and it is worth protecting. Following these steps can greatly reduce your risk of hacks or data theft.
