Tips to get the most accurate broaband speed test
Try a hardwired connection
There are many variables involved in wireless connections as it’s subject to interference. To get the most accurate speed test results, you’ll need to plug your device directly to your router using a CAT6 or higher ethernet cable
If you don’t have a device to test through a hardwire, you can perform the test on your mobile or tablet. However, please bear in mind these results will not be as accurate. This is due to the capability of the device you are running and also the software which comes as standard.
Download the desktop app
While it’s possible to run the speed test directly from your browser, the most reliable results are achieved by downloading an actual desktop tool, like Ookla’s free Speedtest desktop app.
Use multiple devices
If you have more than one device which can be plugged into an ethernet cable (laptop or computer) then test the speed in the same location on each device. This will help to determine if the issue is device specific.
Why it is your broadband speed lower than what your package advertised?
When you signed up to your package, it’s more than likely that your plan promoted speeds ‘up to’ a certain amount. Because of how the industry has evolved, ISPs provide broadband which is within a range ‘up to’ the advertised speed.
If your speed is dramatically different to the advertised speed, there may be an issue. Luckily, there are ways in which you may be able to quickly resolve this yourself.
Router placement for fast internet
If your router is hidden in a cabinet or behind a wall your WiFi signal may be blocked. Make sure the surroundings of your router are clear to improve your speeds.
It’s best to have your router in a place where you use the internet frequently. This could either be nearby the TV if you enjoy streaming movies or your family enjoys gaming, or in your home office! (Please note: It’s recommended that you don’t put the router directly next to the TV as there can be some electrical interference. Try placing it on a shelf or side table close by).
Re-set and re-fresh
Close those pesky background apps, turn your router off and on at the wall, and perform the speed test again on each device (don’t press reset). If your results are still significantly slower than your package advertised, it’s time to contact your internet service provider.
